Shall we dance this dance of life

By Armine Babajanyan

-Now please, let’s dance!

-But everyone will be staring!

-Why would you care? They don’t know you…

-If they don’t know me, I probably don’t know them.

-C’mon, this is just a dance….Why would anyone care about others watching them dance? Is it because you don’t know who is watching you? What else would you hesitate to do if the people around you were strangers?

-Well, I would not smoke… I guess…

-So you do smoke… I guess you don’t smoke around people you know either…

-Why would that matter?

-I don’t know. Why would you not dance?

-You can’t just dance. What if someone sees you and kills you after that?

-Why would they kill you?

-I don’t know. I just felt like saying that…

Crazy girl… why would she think this?

-Would you dance with me if there was no one around?

-Well, would you dance with me if we were on different planets?

-How is that possible?

-Well, what if it is not possible to dance together, like if you are not allowed to come into my country, and I am not allowed to enter yours… In that case we would not be able to meet, though if we put the same music at the same time, we could dance… of course apart but still together…

-I hope that never happens to us…

-My name is Layla…

-Oh, how stupid of me. We have been speaking for hours now, but I did not introduce myself. I am Levon. Your name is beautiful, like you are, Layla…

-Thanks… So you like me?

-Oh, so straight… well, you’re beautiful, but obviously I don’t know you…

-So you don’t hate me?

Now, this girl is really strange man, this thrills me though… I love how strange she is…

-Layla, of course I don’t hate you… your voice, your eyes, I could never hate this beauty…

-I hope I will never disappoint you…

My head goes round. She does not want to disappoint me… Could this wonderful creature like me? I will fight for her all my life…

-I am Azerbaijani…

I love how she moves her lips when she speaks…

-What was it? I didn’t hear.

-I said I am Azerbaijani, from your neighboring country…

-Oh…

Levon, your grandpa is old… All my life I have served in the army… The meaning of my life was to revenge… They killed everyone, do you understand? Everyone…” “Rest in peace, grandpa… I promise I will continue what you have started…

-The dance Layla, it is still there, the dance…

-We can always dance…

-Dance this life, Layla…I don’t know you, but I don’t hate you… Like I don’t know millions of people across the border, so why do I hate them? Why do they hate me? They don’t know me… Your eyes are still beautiful… They are still the same…

-Remember my eyes… I will remember your dance… Maybe we can still dance, apart but together…
